Deposit ULEXITE, LARGELY IN THE FORM OF COTTONBALLS, HAS BEEN MINED FROM THE SOUTHERN PART OF THE SALAR. THE LAKE SURFACE IS A TYPICAL PLAYA WITH WET MUD RIMMING SHALLOW WATERS. IN 1990, THE SHORELINE MUDS WERE WATER-SATURATED TO A DEPTH OF 85 CM, COMMONLY LIGHT GRAY IN COLOR BUT DARK COLORED WHERE ORGANIC-RICH, AND HAD A STRONG HYDROGEN SULFIDE ODOR.
