Comments on the location information

  • HALE (1981B, P. 312, 318, LOC. 8), WHO QUOTED RYAN (1936, SHEET KR-35), SAID THAT IN 1908 A. HYMER SANK A SHAFT ON ALBERT HOPKINS' PLACE, JUST S. OF DEVILS CANYON, NEAR THE LEE WINTERS PLACE. LOC. 8 WAS A COPPER SHAFT. POLK (1948) AND MERRITT (1958) MAPPED THE GEOLOGY OF THE AREA. RYAN (JULY 1936, SHEET KR-35) GIVES THIS AS NE-NE-NW-SE-12, WHICH WOULD BE IN ALLUVIUM. IT IS PROBABLY IN SW-SW-SW-NE-SE-12, AS DISCUSSED IN (4007523). RYAN AND WINNETT (1936, SHEET 2004) HAVE A HOPKINS SHAFT DUG BY A. HYMER IN SW-SW-SE-NW-NE-12, WITH SAME DESCRIPTION, IN 1903. THIS WAS PROBABLY IN THE N2-NE-NE-SW-NE-12 AS SHOWN BY POLK (1948) (CALLED HOPKINS NO. 1 BY ME).
