  • C.A. MERRITT (JUNE 1940, OPEN FILE NO. 0342) LOCATED WORKINGS IN C-NW-NW-SE OF SEC. 33-5N-2E. M.H. WRIGHT (1956, P. 484) LOCATED AN ARRASTRA WITH A TREE GROWING IN THE MIDDLE NEAR C-33-5N-2E. C.A. MERRIT (SEPT. 1940, OGS MINERAL REPT. 8, P. 6) LOCATED THE MINE IN THE SW1/4 OF SEC. 33. C.A. MERRITT (JUNE 1940) MENTIONS THAT THE ARRASTRA WAS KNOWN ABOUT THE TURN OF THE CENTURY. D.K. HALE (1981B, CHRONICLES OF OKLA., V. 59, NO. 3, P. 306, 314, 319) INDICATES THAT THIS AREA WAS KNOWN BY 1889 OR BEFORE. SEVERAL LOCAL NEWSPAPER ARTICLES HAVE BEEN WRITTEN ABOUT THE AREA, REFERRING TO THIS AS A GOLD MINE. J.S. REDFIELD (1927, OGS BULLETIN 42, P. 116) MENTIONS THAT 29 TONS OF CU ORE WERE REMOVED IN AUG. 1913, AND THAT 1300 OZ OF SILVER WERE RECOVERED. MR. CHARLES BAIRD, OF KANSAS CITY, MO., SAID THAT HE WORKED THIS DEPOSIT IN 1897-1898, AND WASHED IN CANADIAN RIVER, AND SENT TO ARGENTINE DISTRICT, KANSAS, FOR SMELTING. HE DID SOME DRILLING ALSO. R.L. HOOVER, SOUTHWESTERN MACHINERY CO.

Comments on the commodity information

  • MARCY (1850) SENT A WAGON LOAD TO FT. SMITH TO NEW ORLEANS TO LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND, FOR SMELTING, WHICH PAID FOR TRANSPORTATION [MARCY, 1866, P. 122]. IN 1897-1898, SOME ORE WAS SHIPPED TO ARGENTINE, KANSAS. IN AUG. 1913, 29 TONS OF ORE WAS SHIPPED AND 1300 OZ OF AG WAS RECOVERED. IN 1914, C.T. CRISWELL OF BYARS SHIPPED 190 TONS, WITH 6187 OZ OF AG, VALUED AT $3,421, OR 33-37 OZ AG/TON OF ORE.
