SITE 35 (USBM, SAMPLE RAF-5) OF STROUD (1970, P. 38), GALLOWAY (1970, FIG. 4), AND SMITH (1974, P. 63, SITE I-41) (2400 FT NE OF GIBBS MINE). CARL COKE RISTER (1941, P. 140) STATED THAT A SURVEYOR, E.A. REIMAN, IN 1883, SAW AN INSCRIPTION ON THE ENTRANCE TO A COPPER MINE NEAR MEDICINE MOUNDS READING, "MERCIA COSTELLO, SAN ANTONIO, A.D. 1847." MCCLELLAN (1877) IN HIS PROSPECTUS, ALSO MENTIONED THE MEDICINE MOUNDS DEPOSIT, AS QUOTED BY EWING (1954, P. 23). HALE (1977, P. 155, 206) SUMMARIZES THESE REPORTS. HENDERSON (1921, P. 721) MENTIONED THAT A CARLOAD OF COPPER ORE WAS SHIPPED FROM CHILLICOTHE IN 1917. REIMAN, IN 1883, FOUND THE INSCRIPTION AT ENTRANCE TO SHAFT: "MERCIA COSTELLO, SAN ANTONIO, A.D. 1847," ACCORDING TO C.C. RISTER (1941, P. 140) AND QUOTED BY HALE (1977, P. 155, 206). MCCLELLAN (1877, PROSPECTUS) MENTIONED THE MEDICINE MOUNDS COPPER DEPOSITS, AS QUOTED BY EWING (1954, P. 23). ABOUT 100 TONS OF ORE WAS PRODUCED IN 1917-1918.
