  • THE COPPER-SHALE PROBABLY OCCURS OVER SEVERAL SQUARE MILES. IT WAS CUSTOMARY FOR INDIANS TO USE HIGH BUTTES FOR OBSERVATION. PROBABLY INDIANS FIRST FOUND THE COPPER.

  • PROBABLY THE EARLY SPANISH EXPLORED THE AREA. THE FOUR MOUNDS ARE ABOUT EL. 1700 FT, OR ABOUT 200-300 FT HIGHER THAN THE RED RIVER AREA TO THE NORTH. THE MOUNDS PROBABLY ATTRACTED ATTENTION.
