| Deposit | VITRIC TUFF BEDS HAVE BEEN ALTERED TO HIGH LITHIUM MONTMORILLONITE IN A LACUSTRINE ENVIRONMENT. THE TUFF BEDS WERE DEPOSITED IN AND ALONG A TRAVERTINE RIDGE CREST AND IN THE NORTHWEST TRENDING SAHLLOW TROUGH PARALLEL WITH A FAULT-TERRACE SHORELINE BORDERING THE LAKE TO THE NORTHEAST. NORTHEAST AND ADJACENT TO THE DEPOSIT, SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF COLEMANITE EXIST AT DEPTH IN A SECTION OF ANHYDRITE, CLAY, AND CALCITE. FAULTING ALONG A MAJOR NORTHWEST-TRENDING STRIKE-SLIP FAULT (TO THE SOUTHWEST) LEAD TO PARTIAL EROSION OF OVERLYING CLAY- AND MUDSTONES. A RECENT OLIVINE BASALT FLOW PARALLELS THE TRAVERTINE RIDGE AND FILLS A FAULT ZONE TROUGH FOR ALMOST 7 MILES; THE HECTORITE DEPOSIT IS LARGELY COVERED BY THIS BASALT. UP TO 8 COLEMANITE HORIZONS INTERSECTED IN HECTOR NO3 (MARSDEN, 1970). MOST HORIZONS ARE LESS THAN 2 FT THICK ONE HORIZON APPROX. 5FT THICK. COLEMANITE OCCURS WITH GYPSIFEROUS BEDS. |
