General comments

Subject category Comment text
Deposit AT MATAMOROS, CELESTITE IS ASSOCIATED WITH EARLIER CALCITE. GYPSUM OCCURS AS A SECONDARY CAVITY-FILLING MATERIAL, COMMONLY DISCONFORMABLE WITH THE CELESTITE-BEARING STRATA. THE DEPOSIT CONTAINS ANGULAR BLOCKS OF LIMESTONE, 1" TO 3 FT IN DIAMETER, THAT ARE RIMMED BY RADIALLY ORIENTED CALCITE CRYSTALS SEPARATING THE LIMESTONE FROM THE CELESTITE. THE DEPOSIT ALSO CONTAINS CHERT NODULES AND HAS PRESERVED CROSSBEDDING; THESE CHARACTERISTICS WITH THE LIMESTONE BLOCKS ARE THOUGHT TO INDICATE REPLACEMENT.
