  • EARLY EXPLORATION INDICATED THAT THE DEPOSIT WAS OF INSUFFICIENT GRADE AND QUALITY TO DEVELOP, BUT THIS CHANGED IN 1984 WHEN PLUESS-STAUFER INDUSTRIES PURCHASED THE JOHNSON TALC PLANT 30 MILES TO THE SOUTH. THE JOHNSON UNDERGROUND TALC MINE WAS CLOSED IN 1983 BY THE PREVIOUS OWNERS AND PLUESS-STAUFER INITIALLY SUPPLED THE PLANT FROM ITS WINDHAM DEPOSIT 150 MILES AWAY. AS THE PLANT WAS IMPROVED AND UPGRADED, A SOURCE OF TALC CLOSER TO THE PLANT WAS SOUGHT. ; ECON.COM: DESPITE ITS RELATIVELY LOW GRADE, SURFACE-MINED TROY TALC IS COMPETITIVE WITH HIGHER GRADE UNDERGROUND-PRODUCED TALC DUE TO MINE ECONOMICS.

Deposit MASSIVE BODY COMPLETELY ALTERED TO TALC-CARBONATE BY MORE THAN ON EPISODE OF STEATITIZATION. THE TROY DEPOSIT IS MISSING THE USUAL OUTER ZONE OF ALTERATION COMPOSED OF HIGH-GRADE (>70% TALC) AND THE STEATITE (55-70% TALC) ZONE. THE TROY DEPOSIT CONSISTS MOSTLY OF TALC-CARBONATE (GRIT, <55% TALC) WITH ONLY A THIN OUTER ZONE OF FOLIATED TALC. IT CONTAINS ABUNDANT QUARTZ VEINS AND CARBONATE MINERALIZATION. IN FRESH OUTCROP, THE ROCK IS DARK GRAY TO BLACK AND CONTAINS ABUNDANT SPECULAR HEMATITE. IN ADDITION, IRON-OXIDE STAINS HIGH-ANGLE JOINT PLANES. ALTHOUGH THIS IS NOT A TYPICAL ORE SCENARIO, AN EXTENSIVE WIDTH OF THE DEPOSIT WAS RELATIVELY FREE OF DELETRIOUS MATERIALS WAS REVEALED BY DRILLING UNDER THE OUTCROP.
