  • REGIONAL METAMORPHISM (AMPHIOBOLITE FACIES); PREC: ZR; 2000 (RF1 - ALKALIC GNEISS AT NEARBY HONKAMAKI DEPOSIT); MGNT + ILMN (+CLRT + HBLD + PLGC); THIS MAGNETITE-ILMENITE DEPOSIT LIES ON THE NORTHERN FLANK OF A LARGE HORNBLENDE GABBRO INTRUSION IN A HETEROGENEOUS ZONE OF AMPHIBOLITES, GABBROS AND ANORTHOSITES. THE ORE BEARING ZONE CONSISTS OF SEVERAL HUNDRED ORE LENSES (20-200 M LONG, 5-30 M WIDE) IN AN ARCH 2 KM LONG AND 500 M WIDE IN A BASIN-LIKE STRUCTURE TRACEABLE TO A DEPTH OF AT LEAST 800 M. SEVERAL ORE TYPES ARE KNOWN EG IMPREGNATION ORES (LOWEST GRADES LESS THAN 20% ILMENITE & MAGNETITE), BANDED ORES (ALTERNATION OF LOW AND HIGH GRADE LAYERS) & MASSIVE ORES. BEYOND ORE ZONES, DISSEMINATION WEAKLY DEVELOPED. HIGH GRADE ORE CONTAINS 35-40% MAGNETITE, 28-30% ILMENITE, 1-2% PYRITE & 0.25% VANADIUM.

  • HIGHEST RECORDED PRODUCTION IN 1969: 1298 000 TPA OF FE-TI-V ORE (ZITZMANN 78) GIVES RISE TO APPROX: 175 000 TPA ILMENITE CONCENTRATE (45% TIO2), 350 000 TPA VANADIFEROUS (0.62%) MAGNETITE CONCENTRATE, 6500 TPA PYRITE CONCENTRATE, 3070 TPA V2O5 RF2.PROBABLY NO PRODUCTION AFTER 1984. PC2 ASSUMES 13.6% ILMENITE RETURN FROM ORE (150 000 TONNES FROM 1 100 000 TONNES ORE IN 1974 [RF4]). PC3 ASSUMES 9 YEARS AT 150 000 TPA (BMR).

  • NON-GEOLOGIC CONSTRAINTS ON DEVELOPMENT OR EXPANSION IN 1-5 YRS. (). DEVELOPMENT(NO); EXPLORATION(NO); ASSESSMENT(RESERVES FOR AT LEAST ANOTHER 30 YEARS DOWN TO A DEPTH OF 800 M. A DECISION WAS MADE IN 1983 TO CLOSE THE MINE, PROBABLY DURING 1984. THIS WAS DUE TO THE LOW PRICES OF THE VANADIUM PENTOXIDE AND IRON CONCENTRATE MEANING THE MINE WAS OPERATING AT A LOSS.); OTHER COMMODITIES PRODUCED - IRON CONCENTRATE 332 000 TONNES IN 1983 (68% FE); VANADIUM PENTOXIDE 2800 TONNES IN 1983 (RF3 ANNUAL REPORT); PYRITE CONCENTRATE 5500 TONNES IN 1978. THE ENTIRE ILMENITE OUTPUT WAS USED AT AN 80 000 TPA TIO2 PLANT AT PORI.
