Comments on development

  • NON-GEOLOGIC CONSTRAINTS ON DEVELOPMENT OR EXPANSION IN 1-5 YRS. ( ENVIRONMENT; GOVERNMENT REGULATIONS; PROCESSING;). EXPLORATION(YES); ASSESSMENT(GRAMPIAN MINING HAS DEVELOPED A NEW PROCESS FOR CONVERTING WEST COAST ILMENITE INTO TIO2 PIGMENT WITHOUT THE TRADITIONAL INTERMEDIATE STAGE. IT IS PLANNING A PILOT PLANT TO OPERATE AT CHARLESTON PROBABLY FROM 1985-87. DEVELOPMENT APPEARS TO REST ON THE SUCCESSFUL OUTCOME OF THE PILOT PLANT AND UPON OBTAINING THE RIGHTS TO MINE THE AREA.); THE ILMENITE IS PECULIAR IN THAT IT IS HIGHLY SUSCEPTIBLE TO ACID LEACHING. A FEASIBILITY STUDY INTO TIO2 PIGMENT PRODUCTION USING HCL IS UNDERWAY. THE RAW ILMENITE CONCENTRATE IS UNSALEABLE DUE TO ITS LOW TIO2 CONTENT (45-47% TIO2) AND IMPURITIES. IT MUST UNDERGO SOME FORM OF BENEFICIATION PROCESS. GOLD COULD BE A VALUABLE BY PRODUCT (AV. GRADE 0.06 G/T) ALSO ZIRCON (0.35%) AND MONAZITE (0.001%). GRID DRILLING TO ESTABLISH RESERVES TO APPROX 10 M DEPTH. AUGER DRILLING TO BE REPLACED BY MECHANICAL DRILLING
  • WHEN DRILL IS IMPORTED FROM AUSTRALIA INTO NEW ZEALAND EARLY 1985. IN FEBRUARY 1985, 20 OF 200 PROPOSED HOLES WERE COMPLETED.
