Workings at the site

  • Type of workings Surface/Underground
    Overall depth 15.2M

Comments on the workings information

  • MINE CONSISTS OF AN OPEN CUT AND SEVERAL SHAFTS. THE OPEN CUT IS 30.5 M (100 FT) LONG, 6.1 M (20 FT) WIDE, AND 4.6 M (15 FT) DEEP NEAR THE SOUTHWESTERN END. THE VERTICAL SHAFTS ARE ABOUT 0.4 KM (0.25 MI) SOUTHWEST OF THE OPEN CUT AND ARE REPORTED TO HAVE BEEN MORE THAN 15.2 M (50 FT) DEEP WITH HORIZONTAL TUNNELS EXTENDING INTO THE BEDROCK FROM THE BOTTOM OF EACH.

Comments on development

  • THIS MINE WAS ONE OF THE FIRST OPERATED IN TAZEWELL COUNTY AND THE WORKINGS CONSIST OF AN OPEN CUT AND SEVERAL SHAFTS. THE SHAFTS WERE LAST WORKED ABOUT 30 YEARS AGO AND THEN SUBSEQUENTLY FILLED WITH ROCK DEBRIS. IT APPEARS THAT THE SUPPLY OF BARITE HAS BEEN LARGELY EXHAUSTED. THE BARITE PRODUCED IN 1904 WAS SHIPPED TO THE TRI-STATE MANUFACTURING COMPANY. THE TOTAL PRODUCTION FROM THIS PROPERTY IS NOT KNOWN.

Deposit GRAY FINE-GRAINED DOLOMITE STRIKING N 80DEGE, AND DIPPING 35DEGSE, CROPS OUT IN THE SIDE WALLS OF THE OPEN CUT. AT THE SOUTHWEST END OF THE CUT IN AN END WALL, A FOUR-FOOT ZONE OF RED CLAY IS EXPOSED BETWEEN LIMESTONE LAYERS. THE CLAY CONTAINING BARITE FRAGMENTS EXTENDS FROM THE SURFACE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE OPEN CUT. THIN SEAMS OF BARITE OCCUR IN THE BEDROCK AND IN THE OVERLYING SOIL MANTLE. THE DIMENSIONS ABOVE REFER TO THE OPEN CUT. THE SHAFTS AND TUNNELS WERE DUG INTO BEDROCK WHERE THE BARITE OCCURRED. THE SHAFTS ARE LOCATED IN A BELT OF DOLOMITE WHICH LOCALLY STRIKE N 70DEGE AND DIP 35DEGSE.
