  • PIT STARTED IN 1927 AND HAS BEEN ACTIVE CONTINUOUSLY SINCE THEN. THE NEWMAN RED IS NOT USED AT WESTERN REFRACTORIES CO. PLANT IN IONE BUT IS SHIPPED TO CERAMIC PLANTS ELSEWHERE. THERE ARE 2 PITS IN NE 1/4 ON TOPO MAP. THE NEWMAN RED CLAY IS 18-20 FT. THICK IN THIS PIT WITH A BED 1-3 FT. THICK OF WHITE CLAY AT THE TOP AND 10-15 FT. OF STRIPPING OF CLAYEY SAND ABOVE THAT. THE WHITE CLAY ABOVE THE RED MOTTLED CLAY IS MINED ALONG WITH THE NEWMAN RED
