  • GEOL.DESC: THE MANGANESE IS CHIEFLY IN THE FORM OF PARTLY OXIDIZED BROWN MANGANESE GARNET, SPESSARTITE, OCCURING IN A BED OF MASSIVE METACHERT. THE METACHERT HAS BEEN RECRYSTALLIZED TO FINE-GRAINED GRAY QUARTZITE, AND IS CUT BY QUARTZ VEINS UP TO 3' THICK. GENERAL STRIKE IS N. 40-55 DEG. W., DIP NEARLY VERTICAL. BELT OF METACHERT EXTENDS ALONG THE STRIKE FOR AT LEAST 450'. ONE PIT, 6 BY 6 BY 6'; A SECOND PIT, 350' TO THE NW, 2 BY 2 BY 2'; TWO ADDITIONAL PITS 100' NW OF PIT NO. 2 SPESSARTITE IS COATED WITH BLACK MANGANESE OXIDES; PYROLUSITE AND PSILOMELANE.
