  • GEOL.DESC: THICK SERIES OF MASSIVE CRYSTALLINE CHERT IS EXPOSED FOR 1000 FT, AND FORMS STEEP CLIFFS ALONG ELK CREEK. TO THE N., THE CHERT STRIKES N 30 E, DIPS 50 S. E., AND OVERLIES THIN-BEDDED SHALY CHERT. TO THE S., THE CHERT IS IN INTRUSIVE OR FAULT CONTACT WITH OLIVINE GABBRO. CHERT IS INTENSELY CONTORTED BANDS OF RED AND PURPLE CHERT ALTERNATING WITH THIN DARK BANDS, WHICH MAY BE MANGANIFEROUS. SOME MANGANESE OXIDE OCCURS AS FILMS ON CHERT.
