  • GEOL.DESC: AREA UNDERLAIN BY PROMINENT MASS OF SERPENTINITE THAT IS INTRUSIVE INTO OLDER ROCKS OF CALAVERAS GROUP AND TAYLOR FORMATION. LOCALLY, ESPECIALLY NEAR RED LEDGE MINE, SERPENTINITE WAS ALTERED TO SILICA-CARBONATE ROCK, WHICH CONSISTS OF MARIPOSITE, ANKERITE, SECONDARY QUARTZ IN VEINLETS, AND MAGNETITE. THE MARIPOSITE IS NICKEL BEARING. LYING UPON SERPENTINITE AND SILICA-CARBONATE ROCK IS MANTLE OF DEEP, NICKEL-BEARING REDDISH-BROWN LATERITE AND SILICA BOXWORK, UP TO 50 FT. DEEP IN PLACES. RANGE AND AVERAGE DEPTH UNKNOWN.
