General comments

Subject category Comment text
Deposit AT PORTAL, LIMESTONE IS ALTERED TO (OR REPLACED BY) GOSSANY FE AND MN OXIDES AND SILICA. 2 OR 3 GOSSANY BEDS AVERAGING 2-4 FT THICK ARE EXPOSED AT PORTAL. REPLACED BEDS ARE DARK GREY TO BLACK AND CHARACTERIZED BY SILICIC FE-MN BOXWORKS, POCKETS OF FE-MN OXIDES AND VUGS OF CLEAR VITREOUS QUARTZ. PORTIONS OF THE ALTERED ROCK ARE VERY STRONGLY SILICIFIED. REPLACED BEDS ARE DARKER IN COLOR THAN THE ORIGINAL HOST WHICH IS A DARK GREY FINELY CRYSTALLINE LIMESTONE DISPLAYING GIRVANELLA ALGAL FOSSIL CASTS. SAMPLE 1443 FROM THE DUMP CONSISTS OF BLACK SILICEOUS FE-MN RICH REPLACEMENT ORE (GOSSAN) WHICH IS QUITE HEAVY. THE ORE SHOWS PSILOMELANE ON SURFACES AND CONTAINS FINELY CRYSTALLINE GALENA, SPHALERITE AND MINOR PYRITE. BRIGHT YELLOW OXIDES ARE PRESENT ON SOME SURFACES OF SAMPLES. THE GOSSAN CONTAINS VUGS FILLED WITH LATE CALCITE AND QUARTZ AND SHOWS SOME BOXWORK STRUCTURES.
