Comments on the geologic information

  • AT MOUND HOUSE LIMESTONES, GYPSUM, SHALES, & META-ANDESITES HAVE BEEN INTRUDED AND SOMEWHAT METAMORPHOSED BY GRANODIORITE. LIMESTONE AND GYPSUM OCCURS IN A FAULT BLOCK ABOUT 3,000 FEET LONG & 1500 FEET WIDE. A THICK LENS OR BED OF GYPSUM DIPS STEEPLY EAST AND IS INTERBEDDED WITH LIMESTONE. IT IS ABOUT 300 FEET WIDE AT THE SOUTH END AND THINS TO ONLY A FEW FEET 700 FEET NORTH OF THE END. AT THE SOUTH THE GYPSUM IS CUT OFF BY GRANODIORITE, ON THE EAST A NEARLY VERTICAL FAULT BRINGS THE GYPSUM IN CONTACT WITH META-ANDESITE, AND ON THE WEST THE GYPSUM LIES ON LIMESTONE INTO WHICH THERE IS MORE OR LESS GRADATION. THE GYPSUM GRADES TO ANHYDRITE ABOUT 300 FEET BELOW THE SURFACE. GYPSITE DEPOSITS TO THE EAST WERE DERIVED FROM EROSION OF THE OLDER GYPSUM.
