  • A LARGE AMOUNT OF SALT WAS PRODUCED FROM THE MARSH BETWEEN 1861 & 1868, AND SHIPPED TO SILVER-ORE MILLS IN VIRGINIA CITY AND ELSEWHERE. THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN THEEARLIEST COMMERCIAL SOURCE OF SALT AIN NEVADA. THE RAILROAD VALLEY CO., SEARCHING FOR POTASH, DRILLED 3 HOLES IN THE MARSH IN 1912. IN 1917, FALLON GROUP FORMEDTHE NEVADA POTASH SYNDDICATE IN AN ATTEMPT TO EXTRACT POTASH FROM THE BRINES, BUT THE VENTURE PROVED UNSUCCESSFUL.
