Comments on development

  • A PROSPECTOR WAS SINKING A SHAFT TO BED ROCK IN THE CANYON BOTTOM IN 1964. PLACERS WERE WORKED BY MEXICANS PRIOR TO 1848,AND THEY WERE "REDISCOVERED" IN 1876, AND WORKED CONTINUOSLY IN 1900'S ON A SMALL SCALE. LOS ANGELES ROCK AND GRAVEL CO (1933-1936) ATTEMPTED A LARGER SCALE MINING EFFORT, WORKING A 2-MILE SEGMENT ALONG THE UPPER PART OF THE CANYON, AND E.E. LAYTON WORKED AN AREA 1 MILE IN EXTENT ABOUT 1.5 MILE BELOW THEIR OPERATION. SMALL OPERATORS HAVE CONTINUED MINING SINCE THEN.
