Deposit THE AREA HAS BEEN KNOWN FOR 15 YRS OR MORE TO CONTAIN SILICIFIED REEDS IN PLIOCENE SEDIMENTARY ROCKS AN AREA OF 2-3 SQ. KM. IN THE PLIOCENE TUFFACEOUS AND VOLCANICLASTIC SEDIMENTARY ROCKS IS ARGILLIZED AND SILICIFIED. UNALTERED EQUIVALENT? STRATA ARE EXPOSED TO THE EAST OF THE LONE MINERALIZED HILL. THE HILL APPEARS TO BE CAPPED BY STRONGLY SILICIFIED SEDIMENTS, WHICH ARE UNDERLAIN AND SURROUNDED? BY ARGILIZED ROCKS. THE SILICIFIED ROCKS CONSIST, IN PART, OF SYN DEPOSITIONAL SUBAQUEOUS SPRING SINTER, PROBABLY PRODUCED BY SUBLACUSTRINE, SILICA-CHARGED HOT SPRINGS WHICH VENTED DURING THE DEPOSITION OF THE PLIOCENE SEDIMENTS. IN ADDITION TO THE REED-BEARING SUBAQUEOUS SINTER, A VERY FINELY AND EVENLY LAMINATED SINTER IS INTERPRETED AS BEING SUBAQUEOUS ALSO. THE PLIOCENE SEDIMENTARY ROCKS ARE GENTLY DIPPING, AND IN THE SILICIFIED AREA CONTAIN IRREGULAR PODS AND LENSES (UP TO 0.5 M THICK) OF LIGHT TO DARK GREY CHALCEDONY, BELIEVED TO BE SINTER. A FEW SILICIFIED HYDROTHERMAL?
Deposit BRECCIAS WERE NOTED. AT A PROSPECT SYMBOL SHOWN ON THE TOPOMAP APPROX. ON THE SEC 27/SEC28 LINE, ARGILLIZED, TUFFACEOUS SEDIMENTS (SMECTITE CLAYS AND SELENITE GYPSUM ARE PRESENT) ARE EXPOSED. THIS PROSPECT IS PROBABLY THE LAKE RANGE MONTMORILLONITE DESCRIBED BY PAPKE (1969, P.113). ARGILLIC ALTERATION PROBABLY RESULTED FROM HYDROTHERMAL ALTERATION DURING THE PERIOD OF HOT SPRING DISCHARGE IN THE PLIOCENE LAKE PRODUCING A SINTER CAP OVER ARGILLIZED SEDIMENTS.
