  • THE ENCANTADA DEPOSITS LIE IN THE COAHUILA COMPOSITE TECTONO-STRATIGRAPHIC TERRANE WHICH IS CONSIDERED A PALEOZOIC ACCRETED TERRANE COMPOSED OF METAMORPHOSED ROCKS OVERLAIN BY A MESOZOIC CARBONATE OVERLAP ASSEMBLAGE. THE OLDEST ROCKS KNOWN IN THE REGION ARE PALEOZOIC METAMORPHIC ROCKS THAT CROP OUT 100 KM NORTHWEST AND APPROXIMATELY 100 KM SOUTH OF LA ENCANTADA IN SIERRA DEL CARMEN AND SIERRA DEL FUSTE, RESPECTIVELY. UNCONFORMABLY OVERLAYING THE PALEOZOIC ROCKS IS A THICK SEQUENCE OF MESOZOIC CARBONATE ROCKS, PART OF THE MARINE TRANSGRESSION RELATED TO THE OPENING OF THE GULF OF MEXICO AND LATE CENOMANIAN-MAESTRICHTIAN TERRIGENOUS SEDIMENTS WITH MINOR CARBONATE DEPOSITS PROBABLY RELATED TO THE BEGINNING OF THE LARAMIDE OROGENY IN MEXICO. PHYSIOGRAPHICALLY, LA ENCANTADA LIES ON THE COAHUILA PROVINCE, AN AREA CONSIDERED TO BE AN EXTENSION OF THE BASIN AND RANGE PROVINCE. TECTONICALLY, IT LIES ON THE BOUNDARY BETWEEN THE JURASSIC COAHUILA PENINSULA AND THE SABINAS BASIN. SLIGHTLY FOLDED,
  • FAULTED AND LOCALLY THRUSTED CRETACEOUS (APTIAN-CENOMANIAN) CARBONATE AND PELITIC ROCKS INTRUDED BY DIORITIC TO GRANODIORITIC DIKES AND A 27 MA OLD GRANODIORITIC PLUTON, COMPOSE THE STRATIGRAPHIC SEQUENCE AT LA ENCANTADA. MARBLE, SKARN, AND HORNFELS DERIVED FROM THE CARBONATE AND PELITIC ROCKS ARE LOCALLY DISTRIBUTED AROUND BOTH THE GRANODIORITE INTRUSIVE AND HYDROTHERMALLY ALTERED BRECCIA AND FRACTURE ZONES. A 27 MA OLD GRANODIORITE BODY, AND FELSIC TO MAFIC DIKES OF OLIGOCENE AGE INTRUDE THE SEDIMENTARY SEQUENCE AT LA ENCANTADA. THE GRANODIORITE IS OF REGIONAL EXTENT AND APPARENTLY HAS A SEMIHORIZONTAL ATTITUDE. IT CONSISTS OF FELDSPARS, QUARTZ, AND FERROMAGNESIAN MINERALS WITH PYRITE AND EPIDOTE ALONG FRACTURES. THIS INTRUSIVE IS KNOWN IN THE MINE FROM DRILL HOLES AND SHOWS ALTERATION TO SERICITE AND CHLORITE. IT APPEARS TO BE RESOPNSIBLE FOR THE FORMATION OF THE TACTITE DOME AND METAMORPHIC HALO. RHYOLITE-PORPHYRY DIKES CONSIST OF FELDSPARS, QUARTZ, HORNBLENDE AND DISSEMINATED
  • PYRITE.

FIRST FINDINGS BY LOCAL PROSPECTORS WERE ABOUT 1950 FOLLOWED BY DISCOVERIES OF THE GUADALUPE, SAN JOSE, LA ESCONDIDA, AND SAN FRANCISCO ORE BODIES IN 1956 BY COMPANIA MINERA LOS ANGELES. LA PERLA ORE BODY WAS FOUND IN 1963. ; ECON.COM: IN 1973 A MAGNETIC SEPARATION PLANT WAS INSTALLED AND IN 1978 A 1200 T/D FLOTATION PLANT WAS BROUGHT ON LINE.

Deposit MINERALIZATION AT LA ENCANTADA IS DEVELOPED WITHIN CRETACEOUS CARBONATE ROCKS OF THE AURORA FORMATION ADJACENT TO A GRANODIORITIC PLUTON. THE DEPOSITS ARE A TYPICAL EXAMPLE OF A ZONED (SKARN/MANTOS/CHIMNEYS/VEINS) INTRUSION-CENTERED, CARBONATE-HOSTED, HIGH-TEMPERATURE SILVER-LEAD MASSIVE-SULFIDES SYSTEM, WITH DEEP OXIDATION AND SUPERGENE ENRICHMENT. THE DEPOSITS SHOW THREE VERTICAL ZONES WITH A DEEP ZONE OF SKARN AND CONTACT OREBODIES COMPOSED OF SILICATES, OXIDE AND SULFIDE MINERALIZATION, AN INTERMEDIATE ZONE OF MANTOS AND CHIMNEYS COMPOSED OF OXIDE, CARBONATE AND RELICT SULFIDE MINERALIZATION WITH BOTH REPLACEMENT AND FILLING TEXTURES, AND AN UPPER ZONE OF MANTOS AND VEINS FORMED MAINLY BY OPEN-SPACE FILLING. NORTHEAST AND NORTHWEST-TRENDING FAULTS AND FRACTURES PREDATE THE MINERALIZATION AND WERE IMPORTANT CONTROLS ON THE MINERALIZATION. A TACTITE DOME, COMPOSED OF CALC-SILICATES AND RICH IN FLUORITE, DEVELOPED ALONG THE GRANODIORITE/LIMESTONE CONTACT CONTROLS THE DISTRIBUTION
Deposit THE ORE BODIES ARE PART OF AN INTRUSION-CENTERED SYSTEM WITH CRUDE ALTERATION ZONING AND A WIDE SPECTRUM OF MINERALIZATION TEXTURES, VARYING FROM REPLACEMENT AT DEPTH TO OPEN-SPACE FILLING TEXTURES UPWARD AND AWAY FROM THE INTRUSIVE CENTER. ORES ZONING CONSISTS OF SKARN AND CONTACT BODIES WHICH LIE ALONG THE TACTITE MARGINS AT DEPTH AND GRADE UPWARDS TO MANTOS AND CHIMNEYS. VEINS DOMINATE AT THE HIGHEST LEVELS ALONG THE SAME STRUCTURAL TRENDS THAT HOST THE MANTOS AND CHIMNEYS. ALL OF THE ORES ARE OXIDIZED AND SUPERGENICALLY ENRICHED BODIES PROBABLY RESULTING FROM DEEP OXIDATION OF IRON, LEAD, ZINC AND SILVER SULFIDES AND SULFOSALTS. MANTOS AND CHIMENYS ARE MASSIVE OXIDIZED BODIES HIGH IN IRON OXIDES PRESUMABLY DERIVED FROM THE OXIDATION OF PYRITE OF PYRRHOTITE. CHIMNEYS HAVE A HIGH-GRADE CORE SURROUNDED BY A HEMATITIC HALO LOW IN SILVER-LEAD VALUES. MINERALIZATION ALSO OCCURS AS FISSURE-FILLING VEINS IN THE UPPER PART OF THE CARBONATE SECTION.
Deposit OF SKARN ORE BODIES. ALTHOUGH A LITHOLOGICAL CONTROL IS NOT WELL ESTABLISHED, THE ORE TENDS TO BE CONCENTRATED WITHIN THE BASE OF THE AURORA FORMATION IN FRACTURES AND RELATIVELY POROUS MICRITIC LIMESTONES. THE MINERALOGY CONSISTS OF A COMPLEX ASSEMBLAGE OF OXIDIZED SULFIDES OF IRON, SILVER, LEAD AND ZINC. WALL ROCK ALTERATION CONSISTS OF MARMORIZATION, BLEACHING AND LOCAL SILICIFICATION; CALC-SILICATE ALTERATION IS RESTRICTED TO THE TACTITE AND GRADES OUTWARD FROM GARNETS-DIOPSIDE TO CHLORITE-EPIDOTE. VERTICAL ZONING OF OREBODY TYPES, WALL ROCK ALTERATION, SKARN MINERALOGY AND THE PRESUMED ORIGINAL SULFIDES SHOW GENERAL SIMILARITIES TO THE NAICA DEPOSIT. ORE GRADES AT LA ENCANTADA AVERAGE 646 G/T OF SILVER AND 23.5% LEAD IN CHIMENYS AND 418 G/T SILVER AND 5.8% LEAD IN SKARN, WHICH ARE COMPARABLE TO OXIDE GRADES PRODUCED IN THE PAST AT NAICA AND SANTA EULALIA. ; INFO.SRC : 1 PUB LIT
