  • DIAMONDS AND GOLD IN THESE PLACER DEPOSITS ORIGINATE FROM THE OLDER ALLUVIAL CHANNEL, FLOOD PLAIN, AND TERRACE DEPOSITS THAT FORMED DURING THE TIME WHEN THE RIO ICABARU WAS A MUCH LARGER RIVER. THE DIAMONDS ARE THOUGHT TO BE FROM THE UAIREN FORMATION OF THE RORAIMA GROUP. ALL OPERATIONS ARE LOCATED WITHIN THE REGION THAT IS EITHERUUNDERLAIN BY OR ADJACENT TO UPLANDS UNDERLAIN BY THE LOWER PART OF THE RORAIMA GROUP. NEARLY ALL OPERATIONS ARE WITHIN A REGION UNDERLAIN BY OR ADJACENT TO UPLANDS UNDERLAIN BY THE LOWER PART OF THE RORAIMA GROUP, SO DIAMONDS WITHIN THE MODERN CHANNEL OF THE RIO ICABARU HAVE PROBABLY BEEN REWORKED FROM PALEO-PLACERS WITHIN THE LOWER RORAIMA.

  • LAND MINING; 37 CHUPADORAS ON RIO ICABARU BETWEEN LOS CARIBES AND THE CONFLUENCE OF THE RIO ICABARU AND THE RIO CARONI (ABOUT 140 KM). LESS THAN 50 % OF THE INSTALLATIONS WERE OBSERVED TO BE WORKING. ABOUT 60% OF THE WORKINGS ARE LOCATED ALONG A 30-KM-REACH STARTING ABOUT 17 KM DOWNSTREAM FROM LOS CARIBES AND EXTENDING TO THE FIRST MAJOR SALTO, ABOUT 5.5 KM DOWNSTREAM FROM THE RIO HACHA. ABOUT HALF OF THESE ARE LOCATED WITHIN 6 KM OF JUNCTIONS WITH MAJOR TRIBUTARIES. 6 ACTIVE GOLD AND DIAMOND PLACER MINES ARE SITUATED IN THE HEADWATER AREAS OF TRIBUTARY DRAINAGES OF THE RIO ICABARU AND THE RIO CUQUENAN. THESE ARE ALL UNDERLAIN BY LOWER RORAIMA ROCKS. PRODUCTION COMES FROM BASAL LENSES < 1 M THICK.
