  • ECONOMIC COMMENTS: OLD ALCALDE ( SAM LANHAM) FURNACE BUILT 1883-1884 USING CONVICT LABOR TO TREAT ORES FROM AROUND RUSK. PRODUCING 8-10 TPD IRON 1884-1885 AND 25-30 TPD IRON 1886-1896, WAS REBUILT IN 1896 TO YIELD 7,000 TO 10,000 LT/Y PIG IRON AND OPERATED TO 1903. IN 1903-1904 A NEW 23,000 LT/Y FURNACE WAS BUILT, EXPANDING TO 36,000 TPY IN 1905. CLOSED 1909 AND LEASED 1913 TO TEXAS IRON ASSOC. BUT NO FURTHER PRODUCTION WAS MADE. THE TASSIE BELL FURNACE WAS BUILT AT NEW BIRMINGHAM 1889-90 PRODUCING 13,500 TO 15,000 LT PIG IRON A YEAR TO 1896. THE STAR AND CRESCENT FURNACE, BUILT 1890-91, PRODUCED 18,000 TO 25,000 LT FE IN 1891-92 AND 1907.

Deposit AN UPPER LAYER OF LAMINATED OXIDE ORE 2 TO 8 IN THICK UNDERLAIN BY LEDGES OF OXIDE ORE. ORE OUTCROPS OVER AN AREA OF 7500 AC AND ORE WITH LESS THAN 10 FT OVERBURDEN COVERS 4250 AC.
