  • SKETCH MAP OF WORKINGS IN MILLER (1944, P. 94). IN 1919: AN OPEN PIT 150' LONG, 75' WIDE, 30' HIGH WALL FOUR VERTICAL SHAFTS IN BOTTOM OF PIT AND SEVERAL HORIZONTAL DRIFTS. POND IS LOCATED AT PIT IN 1988 AND FOREST SERVICE HAS NOT RECLAIMED IT BUT DEVELOPED IT INTO A WILDLIFE STUDY AREA. SHAFTS WERE FILLED IN IN THE 1940'S-1950'S.

Comments on development

  • WORKED FOR IRON DURING CIVIL WAR. EARLY 1900'S, 15 TO 20 CARLOADS OF MN CONCENTRATES SHIPPED FROM MINE. CLOSED THEN REOPENED AND WORKING DURING WWI (1917-1918) BY THE HOLSTON MINERAL CO. WHO SHIPPED FERRUGINOUS MN ORE. THE ORE WAS HAULED BY TRAMLINE FROM MINE TO WASHER ON SLEMP CRK. CLOSED AND REOPENED DURING WWII. A GASOLINE-ENGINE DRIVEN LOG BUDDLE WAS USED TO WASH ORE AT MINESITE INTO TAILINGS POND (STILL THERE). WATER CAME FROM WELL DRILLED FOR THIS OPERATION. FOREST SERVICE MADE INTO WILDLIFE MGMT AREA IN THE 1970'S.
