Mining district

District name Gold-Pyrite Belt

Comments on the production information

  • THERE IS NO MENTION OF ANY ORE BEING PRODUCED; HOWEVER, THERE ARE 2 PITS, EACH ABOUT 40 FT. DEEP.

Comments on the reserve resource information

  • PYRITIC BODY WAS OF TOO LOW GRADE TO JUSTIFY FURTHER DEVELOPMENT.

Comments on the workings information

  • TWO PITS ABOUT 12 M DEEP WERE EVIDENT AROUND 1958. IN JUNE 1987, THE SHAFT-PITS ON THE HILLSIDE ABOVE THE CREEK WERE FILLED IN WITH BRUSH AND TREE SLASHINGS. CONSTRUCTION OF POTOMAC MILL PLAZA JUST UP THE HILL HAS CONTRIBUTED TO THIS FILLING IN OF THE WORKINGS.

Comments on development

  • LIMITED PROSPECTING WAS CONDUCTED PRIOR TO 1920'S, BUT NO MINING WAS EVER CONDUCTED.

Deposit AN ABUNDANCE OF PYRITE AND WEATHERED OUT PYRITE WAS SEEN IN LOOSE PIECES OF SLATE ON THE EXPOSURE (1987). LONSDALE (1927) DESCRIBES DEPOSIT AS LENS-LIKE BODY OR POCKET IN GRAPHITIC SLATE, WHILE LUTTRELL (1966) DESCRIBES OCCURRENCE AS BEING IN A FELSIC DIKE.
