Deposit PRODUCTION OF CASSITERITE CONCENTRATE FROM THIS DISTRICT IS NO MORE THAN A FEW HUNDRED TONS PER ANNUM(COMPARED TO ABOUT 5000 TONS FROM RONDONIA DISTRICT)FROM PLACER AND LODE MINING. PRINCIPAL OPERATOR IS COMPANHIA DE ESTANHO DE SAO JOAO DEL REI WHO SELL THE CONCENTRATES TO THE COMPANHIA ESTANIFERA DO BRASIL FOR REDUCTION IN THEIR SMELTER AT VOLTA REDONDA IN STATE OF RIO DE JANEIRO. NATURAL CONCENTRATES FROM THIS DISTRICT MAY CONTAIN AS MUCH AS 85 PERCENT CASSITERITE, 10 PERCENT TANTALITE, 10 PERCENT MICROLITE(ALSO REFERRED TO AS DJALMAITE), 40 PERCENT ILMENITE. THE SAO JOAO DEL REI TIN DISTRICT IS THE CENTER FOR CASSITERITE PRECAMBRIAN IN A TIN BERING AREA KM EAST-WEST AND 30 KM NORTH-SOUTH IN SOUTHERN MINAS GERAIS STATE. CASSITERITE IS MINED FROM ALLUVIAL DEPOSITS AND FROM TIN-BEARING PEGMATITES THE SOURCE OF THE MINERAL. THE PRINCIPAL PEGMATITE IS THE NAZARINP ON THE FAZENDA VOLTA GRANDE NEAR THE RIO DAS MORTES, WORKED BY THE COMPANHIA DE ESTANHO DE SAO JOAO DEL REI. COLUMBIUM
Deposit AND TANTALUM IN COLUMBITE-TANTALITE AND MICROLITE CONTINUED IN 1971 TO BE PRODUCED IN LIMITED QUANTITY FROM THE TIN-BEARING PEGMATITES OF THE NAZARENO DISTRICT IN MINASA GERAIS. ALL OUTPUT IS EXPORTED AND IN 1970 THESE AMOUNTED TO 41 METRIC TONS OF COLUMBITE (PROBABLY CONTAINING MUCH MICROLITE) AND 208 TONS OF TANTALITE, WITH THE US AS PRINCIPAL DESTINATION. IN 1971 EXPORTS WERE 63 MT COLUMBITE AND 290 TONS MT TANTALITE. REFERENCE IS DISPATCH A-235 OF OCTOBER 10, 1972 FROM MINERALS ATACHE, RIO DE JANEIRO. PEGMATITE DISTRICT COVERS AN AREA OF ABOUT 1200 SQUARE KILOMETERS. ANNUAL PRODUCTION ABOUT 290 TONS TA-NB CONCENTRATES. RESERVES 116,000 TONS TA-NB. RECORDS W001416 BY MAX G.
