Controls for ore emplacement

  • Vein Ructures Are Fault And Shear Zones Of Probably Small Displacement And Vein Material Was Deposited In Open Fissures And Breccia Cavities With Only Minor Replacement Of Wall Rock. Quartz And Pyrite Are The Most Abundant Minerals. Tetrahedrite And Sphalerite Are The Dominant Ore Minerals, Accompanied By Minor Amounts Of Galena And Chalcopyrite. Rhodochrosite, Boulangerite, And Arsenopyrite Are Presen Some Veins.

Comments on the geologic information

  • THE REGION OF CERRO SAYAPULLO IS ONE OF COMPLEXLY FOLDED AND FAULTED CRETACEOUS ROCKS TRENDING N 60 DEG W AND ARE INTRUDED BY A NUMBER OF STOCKS 200 M TO 5 KM ACROSS (STAPPENBECK, 1929). THE OLDEST ROCKS SHOWN ON THE MAP ARE MEDIUM-BEDDED, LIGHT GRAY TO WHITE, SUGARY CROSS-BEDDED QUARTZITIC SANDSTONES, WITH A LITTLE INTERBEDDED SHALE AND COAL, OF THE CHIMU FORMATION (LOWER NEOCOMIAN). THESE ROCKS FORM A BLOCK ALONG THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE MAPPED AREA THAT IS THRUST OVER THE YOUNGER CARHUAZ FORMATION ALONG A FAULT TRENDING WNW. A SEQUENCE OF THIN- TO MEDIUM-BEDDED VARIEGATED SHALE, MUDSTONE, SILTSTONE, AND SANDSTONE IS CORRELATED WITH THE CARHUAZ FORMATION (UPPER NEOCOMIAN). THESE ROCKS ARE COMMONLY WELL INDURATED AND STRONGLY PYRITIZED, AND ARE THE WALL ROCKS OF MOST OF THE IMPORTANT VEINS. THE CARHUAZ FORMATION NORMALLY IS OVERLAIN BY THE GOYLLARISQUISGA FORMATION (APTIAN), BUT IN MAP AREA THE CONTACT BETWEEN THE TWO FORMATIONS LIES BELOW LEVEL OF OBSERVATION. THE GOYLLARISQUISGA CROPS
  • OUT ONLY ALONG THE RIDGE NORTH OF THE RIO SAYAPULLO. IT CONSISTS MAINLY OF LIGHT-GRAY, SUGARY, CROSS-BEDDED QUARTZITIC SANDSTONE SIMILAR IN LITHOLOGY TO THE CHIMU SANDSTONE. THE SEQUENCE OF ALBIAN

Comments on the workings information

  • SILVER VEINS OF THE DISTRICT MAY HAVE BEEN EXPLOITED PRIOR TO 1771 (MALAGA, 1905A, P. 18) AND ALMOST SURELY WERE BY 1774, WHEN OXIDIZED ORES OF THE DESCUBRIDORA MINE WERE WORKED. OLD FILL ON THE RESTAURADORA VEINS HAS YIELDED A FEW COPPER TOOLS AND ARTIFACTS WHICH MAY EVEN BE PRECOLUMBIAN. TOWARD THE END OF THE 18TH CENTURY THE MINES APPARENTLY WERE ABANDONED, NOT TO BE REOPENED UNTIL 1830-1835. FROM THAT TIME UNTIL 1909, THE DEPOSITS WERE WORKED SPORADICALLY AND ARE REPORTED TO HAVE YIELDED NEARLY 150,000 KG OF SILVER. HIGH GRADE ORE WAS SHIPPED TO EUROPE AND LOW GRADE ORE WAS TREATED IN AN AMALGAMATION PLANT AT VISTA BELLA, JUST WEST OF SAYAPULLO. FROM 1909 TO 1915, THE MINES WERE OPERATED BY THE COMPANIA MINERA SAYAPULLO, AND ABOUT 1,000,000 SOLES (ABOUT $500,000) WORTH OF SILVER WAS PRODUCED. FROM 1915 TO 1923, A SMELTER OPERATED AT SAYAPULLO AND PRODUCED NEARLY 5000 TONS OF COPPER MATTE, CONTAINING 30-40% COPPER AND 4-5 KG OF SILVER PER TON. SINCE 1923, MOST OF THE MINES HAVE
  • BEEN OPERATED BY THE SINDICATO EXPLOTADORA DE SAYAPULLO.
