Comments on development

  • THE FURNACE SUPPLIED BY NANNY'S MOUNTAIN IRON ORE WAS THE FIRST BUILT IN SOUTH CAROLINA. IT WAS ESTABLISHED BY COL. HILL AND WM. E. HAYNE (HILLS IRON MINING COMPANY) PRIOR TO THE REVOLUTION. DURING THE REVOLUTION, THE BRITISH BURNED THE FURNACE COMPLEX BECAUSE IT WAS CASTING CANNON BALLS. BLOOMERIES WERE BUILT AFTERWARDS BUT THE COMPANY FAILED BECAUSE OF THE INFERIORITY OF THE IRON AS BLOOM IRON, THE DECREASED QUANTITY OF TIMBER FOR FUEL IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD AND THE EXPENSE OF TRANSPORTATION. SLOAN (1908) REPORTED THREE CORE HOLES DRILLED AT A 45 DEG ANGLE FROM THE EASTERN SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN REVEALED SOLID PYRRHOTITE 40-50 FT THICK. GRATON (1906) STATES THE PYRRHOTITE WAS ENCOUNTERED AT A DEPTH OF 400 FT.
