Geologic structures

Type of structure Regional
Structure description Inward-Dipping Cone-Like Structure; Folding And Faulting (Including Low-Angle Thrusting) Exists, But Are Of Minor Importance; Erosion, Peneplanation And Build-Up Of Younger Sediments Are Basic Criteria Regionally.
Type of structure Local
Structure description The Area'S Upper, Middle And Lower Chrome Groups (Underlying The Merensky Reef) Are Extraordinarily Uniform As To Composition And Thickness. Faults And Folds, Locally, Are Of Minor Importance Only. Seam Undulations, However, Are Common And Thus Present Localized (Albeit Moderate) Changes In The Dip.

Comments on the workings information

  • A LARGE TRENCH TRENDING N 70 E IS 4.5 M WIDE, 15 M LONG, AND 1.5 M DEEP. IN 1887 A SHAFT WAS OPENED TO A DEPTH OF 38 M. SURFACE WORKINGS EXTEND IN NORTHWEST DIRECTION FOR 70 M. OTHER WORKINGS CONSIST OF NUMEROUS PITS AND TRENCHES OVER AN AREA APPROXIMATELY 200 YARDS SQUARE. THE WORKINGS ARE CONSIDERABLY OVERGROWN.
  • SEE DESCRIPTION OF DEPOSIT COMMENTS. MINING IS BY DEVELOPMENT DRIFTS AND INCLINES IN ORE TO CREATE MODIFIED ROOM AND PILLAR METHOD. BROKEN ORE IS MOVED DOWNWARD INTO ORE PASSES BY SLUSHER AND RAIL-HAULED VIA MAIN HAULAGE DRIFTS TO SKIP LOADING POINTS FOR INCLINE SHAFT HOISTING TO THE SURFACE. WASTE IS BACK-FILLED UNDERGROUND. STOPING WIDTHS AVERAGE 1.75 METER TO REMOVE BOTH SEAMS DESCRIBED ABOVE. SURFACE FACILITIES CONSIST OF HAND SORTING TABLES, SCREENS, BALL MILLS, VIBRATORY TABLES AND WASHING.

Comments on development

  • THE PRESENT OPERATOR ASSUMED CONTROL OF THIS MINE IN 1947 . EARLIER OPERATORS DATE BACK TO 1924 . ; MILL.CAP: 0.3 MIL. MET. T/YR. ; ECON.COM: LARGELY EXPORT-ORIENTED, WITH LOCAL SALES AS WELL. BULK OF SALES ARE IN THE FOUNDRY SANDS MARKETS. THE MINE HAS EXPANDED IN RECENT YEARS AND CAN BE EASILY STEPPED UP FURTHER WITHOUT DAMAGING LONG-LIFE OUTLOOK.
  • FIRST OPERATED AS PLACER. IN 1933 EXTENSIVE EXPLORATION INDICATED DEPOSIT OF LOW GRADE FOR GOLD . THE MINE WAS APPARENTLY INACTIVE FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME PRIOR TO 1933 WHEN EXTENSIVE EXPLORATION WORK WAS CARRIED OUT. THE DEPOSIT PROVED TO BE OF TOO LOW GRADE TO BE WORKED ECONOMICALLY.

Deposit MAX. THICKNESS REFERS TO AGGREGATE THICKNESS OF TWO SEAMS CURRENTLY BEING WORKED IN THE "LOWER GROUP" OF CHROME SEAMS ( TOTAL MINABLE SEAMS; 4 ). DEPTH TO TOP IS RANGE FROM OUTCROP TO CURRENT VERTICAL MAX. MINING DEPTH. DEPTH TO BOTTOM IS CURRENT MAX. MINING DEPTH, THOUGH ORE CONTINUES TO GREATER DEPTHS IN THE COMPANY'S LEASEHOLD. ALL MINING (CURRENT AND PLANNED) IS IN THE "CRITICAL ZONE" OF THE BUSHVELD IGNEOUS COMPLEX. MAX. LENGTH IS STRIKE LENGTH OF MINABLE CHROMITE IN THIS LEASEHOLD.
