Comments on the workings information

  • CREDNER (1869) REPORTED 8 OR 10 OLD CUTS AND SHAFTS, AND A LARGE, WATER-FILLED EXCAVATION 11 M (35 FT) DEEP. SEVERAL LARGE TRENCHES, TEADING TOWARD THE TOP OF THE HILL, THE LARGEST BEING 9 TO 12 M (30 TO 40 FT) WIDE, ABOUT THE SAME DEPTH, AND 61 TO 91.5 M (200 TO 300 FT) LONG IN A NE-SW DIRECTION, AND MANY PITS AND SHAFTS WERE ALSO REPORTED BY TABER (1913). IN 1974, 2 TRENCH CUTS WERE EVIDENT.

Comments on development

  • THE PLACER DEPOSITS WERE WORKED DURING THE EARLY DAYS OF GOLD MINING IN BUCKINGHAM COUNTY? IT IS REPORTED THE GRAVELS YIELDED MUCH GOLD. PROSPECTING HAS BEEN CARRIED ON AT VARIOUS TIMES IN THE ENDEAVOR TO LOCATE THE VEIN FROM WHICH THE GOLD ESCAPED. IN 1865, A MILL WAS BEING STARTED, BUT IT WAS PROBABLY NEVER FINISHED.
