Deposit ANNUAL CAPACITY OF THE FIRST STAGE OF THE PROJECT WILL BE 35 MILLION POUNDS (ABOUT 16,000 T) OF NICKEL CONTAINED IN A 75 PER CENT NICKEL MATTE. THE SECOND STAGE WILL INCREASE NICKEL PRODUCTION CAPACITY OF OVER 100 MILLION POUNDS (ABOUT 45,000 T) IN 1979. THE ORE IS DRIED, SCREENED, AND BLENDED BEFORE IT IS PREHEATED AND PARTIALY REDUCED IN A KILN DEVELOPED BY INCO FOR THE PROJECT. SULFUR IS INJECTED AT THE DISCHARGE END OF THE 100 METER KILN. THE REDUCED PRODUCT IS SMELTED IN A ELECTRIC FURNACE, AND THE 25 % NICKEL MATTE IS FROM THE SURFACE AND TRANSFERRED TO A TOP-BLOWN ROTARY CONVERTER. CONVERTER MATTE CONTAINING 75 % NI. SLAG FROM THE CONVERTER IS RETURNED TO THE REDUCTION KILN.
