Comments on the workings information

  • ABOVE REFERS TO COHN SHAFT AND WORKINGS. IN 1974, THREE WATER-FILLED SHAFTS, SIX CAVED PITS, AND DUMPS WERE EVIDENT. A SHAFT WAS SUNK TO AN UNKNOWN DEPTH IN 1865. IN 1910 A SHAFT WAS SUNK TO A DEPTH OF 22 M (72 FT) AND CROSSCUTS WERE DRIVEN NORTHWEST AT THE 14 AND 18 M (45 AND 60 FT) DEPTHS. A SHORT CROSSCUT WAS ALSO DRIVEN SOUTHEAST FROM THE LOWER LEVEL. ANOTHER SHAFT WAS SUNK IN 1911. THE COHN SHAFT WAS 91 M (300 FT) DEEP, AT WHICH DEPTH A CROSSCUT EXTENDS 160 FT (49 M) N 37 DEG W. AT 24 M (80 FT) FROM THE SHAFT DRIFTS RUN 18 M (60 FT) NORTHEAST AND 26 M (84 FT) SOUTHWEST. ANOTHER SHAFT WAS SUNK TO A DEPTH OF 20 M (65 FT). AT THE 12.5 M (41 FT) LEVEL A CROSSCUT WAS DRIVEN 4 M (14 FT) NORTHWEST, WHERE IT ENTERED OLD WORKINGS WHICH WERE CLEANED OUT AND RETIMBERED FOR A CONSIDERABLE DISTANCE IN EACH DIRECTION. AT THE 20 M LEVEL DRIFTS WERE RUN ON THE VEIN FOR 32 M (105 FT) SOUTHWEST AND 3.7 M (12 FT) NORTHEAST.

Comments on development

  • COLE AND WOOLFORK DISCOVERED MINE IN 1831, DURING WHICH YEAR THEY CARRIED ON SURFACE WASHINGS FOR SEVERAL MONTHS. VEINS WERE DISCOVERED BY MOSS IN 1832, AND A VEIN 1.8 M (6 FT) THICK IS SAID TO HAVE BEEN OPENED BY THE FISHERS AND WORKED UNTIT THE LAND WAS PURCHASED BY WM. K. SMITH? LATER IT WAS SOLD TO RICHARDS WHO WORKED THE MINE 12 MONTHS AND THEN SOLD IT TO AN ENGLISH COMPANY. AFTER TWO YEARS, DURING WHICH IT IS SAID TO HAVE BEEN BADLY MANAGED, THE PROPERTY WAS DIVIDED AND SOLD IN TWO PARTS. SINCE THAT TIME ONLY THE WESTERN PART OF THE OLD ESTATE HAS BEEN KNOWN AS THE WALLER MINE. IN 1865, TURNER, HUGHES & CO. SANK A SHAFT AND DID SOME DEVELOPMENT WORK. IN 1876, THE PROPERTY WAS WORKED FOR 30 DAYS. IN 1910, A COMPANY SANK A SHAFT 22 M (72 FT) DEEP, AND DROVE CROSSCUTS NORTHWEST AT-14 AND 18 M (45 AND 60 FT) DEPTHS. IN THE LOWER CROSSCUT THE VEIN WAS FOUND, BUT A DRIFT STARTED SOUTHEAST SOON RAN INTO OLD WORKINGS. IN 1911 ANOTHER SHAFT WAS SUNK. THE GOOCHLAND GOLD MINES HOLDING
  • CORP. DEVELOPED THE MINE STARTING IN 1930 UNTIT AT LEAST THE SUMMER OF 1933. THE COHN SHAFT WAS SUNK IN 1932.
