Comments on the workings information

  • MINE CONSISTED OF OPEN CUTS, TRENCHES, AND ONE SHAFT. THE MAIN OPEN CUT IS 46 M (150 FT) LONG, 9 M (30 FT) WIDE, AND 4.6 M (15 FT) DEEP, WITH AN INCLINED SHAFT DIPPING NORTHWEST NEAR THE WEST END OF THE CUT. THE SHAFT IS ACCESSIBLE TO A DEPTH OF ONLY ABOUT 3 M (10 FT); IT WAS DRIVEN IN THE RESIDUUM BETWEEN VERTICAL BEDS OF DOLOMITE. PIT IS TRASH-FILLED WITH MANY FRAGMENTS OF BARITE ALONG EDGE OF THE CUT - 1986.

Comments on development

  • MINE WAS WORKED IN 1894 (MAYBE BEFORE) AND A SMALL QUANTITY OF BARITE WAS SHIPPED TO A MILLING PLANT IN LYNCHBURG IN THE SAME YEAR. MORE RECENT PROSPECTING (PRE-1938) WAS DONE ALONG SLATE BRANCH TO THE SOUTHWEST OF THE MINE.
