  • THREE SHAFTS HAVE BEEN SUNK BY THE VARIOUS DEVELOPERS (18.3, 26.5, AND 38.1 M). IN ADDITION SEVERAL PROSPECT PITS AND TRENCHES HAVE BEEN DUG.

Comments on development

  • AROUND 1900 LIMITED PROSPECTING WAS ACCOMPLISHED AROUND THE WESTERN OPENING. IN 1905, A MR. GRAVES DEVELOPED THE WESTERN END INCLUDING SINKING A 26.5 M SHAFT, BUT PRODUCED NO ORE. MR. FRANK BOWMAN BEGAN WORKING THE EAST END OF THE DEPOSIT IN 1906 AND WORKED AT INTERVALS UNTIL 1917, INCLUDING A 38.1 M SHAFT. IN 1918, HE ERECTED A SMALL MILL AND PRODUCED 25 T OF ZINC CONCENTRATE. IN 1942-1943, THE AREA WAS SURVEYED BY THE U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY. IN 1964, THE AMERICAN STEEL CO. OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, BEGAN MINING OPERATIONS, BUT CLOSED DOWN PRIOR TO SHIPMENT OF ANY ORE DUE TO LAND LITIGATIONS.
