  • BY 1868 MINE HAD BEEN WORKED TO 94 FEET THROUGH A LENGTH OF 250 FEET ALONG A DEPOSIT 12 FEET THICK. MINE IDLE TILL 1879 WHEN AN OLD SLOPE WAS REOPENED, KILNS BUILT TO ROAST ORE AND A NEW SHAFT WAS SUNK 1,000 FEET SOUTH INTO AN ORE DEPOSIT AVERAGING 11 FEET THICK. TEMPORARILY CLOSED IN 1885 REOPENED IN 1895 AND AGAIN IN 1900. WORKED ALMOST CONTINUOUSLY FROM 1900 TILL 1964. IN 1901 A NEW THREE COMPARTMENT SLOPE WAS BUILT 1400 FEET SOUTH OF OLD ONE. BY 1903 IT REACHED 497 FEET PRODUCING 30,172 TONS IN THAT YEAR. FROM 1903 TILL 1910 WAS PRODUCING 100,000 TONS PER YEAR. RECORDS OF 1937 INDICATE A 1400 FT VERTICAL HOISTING SHAFT WAS IN OPERATION. MANY BUILDINGS STILL STANDING (1985)
