Comments on development

  • OPENED 1760, SUPPLIED FORGES ON PROPERTY FOR ALMOST A CENTURY AFTER. MOST ORE BETWEEN 1760 AND 1868 WAS TAKEN FROM SURFACE. BETWEEN 1868-1873 EXTENSIVE EXPLORATIONS WERE DONE INCLUDING OPEN CUTS AND SHAFTS BETWEEN 1873-1884 FIVE VEINS WERE WORKED ON. SW OPENING WAS KNOWN AS THE COAL HOUSE CUT AND WAS 150 FT LONG, 45 FEET DEEP HITTING ORE 40 FEET WIDE. NUMEROUS OTHER SHAFTS AVERAGED 35 TO 40 FEET DEEP. IN 1879 THE CHESTER IRON COMPANY OWNED AND WORKED THE MINE PRODUCING 21,548 TONS THAT YEAR WITH A YIELD OF APPOX 3000 TONS A MONTH TILL ABOUT 1884. BY 1886 PRODUCTION HAD DROPPED TO 1400 PER MONTH AND BY 1896 THE MINE CLOSED. WORKINGS WERE NUMEROUS AND INCLUDED OPEN PITS, SHAFTS AND AT LEAST ONE TUNNEL 500 FT LONG DRIVEN INTO A HILL. 1985 WHOLE AREA IS COVERED BY LARGE, WATER FILLED OPEN CUTS
