Deposit ESPENSHADE (1954) P.94 NOTES 2 OCCURRENCES ON THE NUTTAL ESTATE. (NO. 20-21, PL.2) OF MANGANESE FLOAT THAT WERE NOT PROSPECTED. NO 20 IS PROBABLY THE "NUTTAL MINE" DESCRIBED IN THIS FIELD VISIT. NO. 21 IS PROBABLY THE MOORE PROSPECT. THIS MEANS THAT ANY ORE SHIPPED FROM THE NUTTAL MINE WAS PROBABLY IN THE PERIOD OF 1955-1959. ESPENSHADE (1954) DESCRIBES A BELT OF MN OXIDES AND CHERT FOR A DISTANCE 1 1/5 MILES "BETWEEN ROUTES 605 AND 623" AND 1/4 MILE SE OF GOWANS HILL. GOWANS HILL IS NOT SHOWN ON THE 1968 TOPOGRAPHIC MAP BUT APPEARS TO BE NE TRENDING DISSECTED RIDGE JUST SE OF THE JAMES RIVER AT A HORSESHOE BEND AND EAST OF PETTIJOHN ISLAND. ESPENSHADE ALSO INDICATES "BECKHAM" A 1/2 MILE FURTHER SW ALONG ROUTE 605 INSTEAD OF AT THE INTERSECTION OF 683 AND 605 AS SHOWN ON THE TOPOGRAPHIC MAP. THERE ARE SEVERAL MINES AND PROSPECTS INDICATED AS "NUTTAL." SOME OF THESE PROPERTIES HAVE BEEN CONTESTED FOR MINERAL RIGHTS FOR DECADES ACCORDING TO W.M. MARTIN (PERSONAL COMMUNICATION).
