  • ORE PRODUCTION CAPACITY GREATER THAN 3,000,000 TONNES/YEAR. IN 1987, SARACA IV AND AREA NORTH WERE IN PRODUCTION. AFTER ALCAN DISCOVERY, MINERACAO RIO DE NORTE AND ALCOA/BILLITON DEMONSTRATED 1 BILLION TONS OF RESOURCES. IN 1974, MRN WAS CONSTITUTED CVRD (46%), ALCAN (24%), CBA (10%), BILLTON (5%), REYNOLDS (5%), AND NORKS HYDRO (5%). PROJECT TROMBETAS INITIATED IN 1976 AT COST OF 430 MILLION DOLLARS. MINERAL PRODUCED IN 1979 (AUG.) BY ALCAN.

BAUXITE CHANGES INTO KAOLINITIC UNDERCLAY WHICH CAN BE UP TO 50 M THICK DEPENDING ON BEDDING IN BARREIRAS SEDIMENTS. ALEVA (1981) GIVES BAUXITE PROFILE DESCRIPTION.
