| Deposit | SOME CARBONATE ORE WAS PRODUCED FROM PITS. LIGHT-TO MEDIUM-BROWN SPHALERITE, WITH SOME PYRITE, OCCURS IN GANGUE OF WHITE, COARSELY CRYSTALLINE DOLOMITE. MINERALIZATION VARIES SO THAT RICHER BODIES OF ORE ARE SEPARATED BY LOW-GRADE OR BARREN ROCK. CHERT IS IRREGULARLY DISTRIBUTED IN THE DOLOMITE MATRIX, AND HOST ROCK. BRECCIA CONSISTS OF ANGULAR FRAGMENTS OF HOST ROCK CEMENTED BY GANGUE DOLOMITE, CALCITE, SPHALERITE, CHERT, AND PYRITE. MUCH OF THE PYRITE HAS ALTERED TO LIMONITE. BRECCIATED HORIZONS COINCIDE WITH LOCAL STRIKE OF BEDDING. SPHALERITE LOCALLY OCCURS AS ROSETTES AS MUCH AS AN INCH IN DIAMETER. THE PRINCIPAL ORE ZONE IS A BRECCIATED DOLOMITE, 2 TO 5 FEET BELOW A SANDY DOLOMITE (6 INCHES THICK) NEAR THE TOP OF THE KINGSPORT FORMATION. ORE-BEARING BED IS 18 TO 20 FEET IN THICKNESS. EARLIER WORKERS CONSIDERED BRECCIATION THE RESULT OF PRE-MINERALIZATION FAULTS AND FLEXURES. RECENT THEORIES TO THE CONTRARY (SEE ECON. GEOL., V. 66, NO. 5, 1971) FOLLOW A CONCEPT OF SOLUTION-COLLAPSE AS A MODE OF ORIGIN FOR THE BRECCIAS, WHICH WERE SUBSEQUENTLY MINERALIZED. |
