Comments on the production information

  • MINE WAS IDLE IN 1919, 1922, 1924, 1927-1955.

Comments on the workings information

  • WORKINGS CONSISTED OF AN OPENCUT, SHAFT, TUNNEL, PITS, AND DUMPS. THE TUNNEL WAS 91.5 M (300 FT) LONG. IN 1982 ONLY THE OPENCUT WAS VISIBLE, THE TUNNEL AND SHAFT HAVING CAVED IN. NO ORE WAS SEEN ON THE DUMPS.

Comments on development

  • MINE WAS OPENED IN OR SHORTLY BEFORE 1910 BY THE DRY RUN MINING AND DEVELOPMENT COMPANY. THE COMPTON MANGANESE CORP. OPERATED THE MINE INTERMITTENTLY FROM 1916-1918. THE PITTSBURG MANGANESE CORP. OPERATED MINE FROM 1920-1926, EXCEPT FOR A SHORT TIME IN 1925 WHEN THEY LEASED THE MINE TO OLD DOMINION MANGANESE MINING AND REFINING CO., WHICH SHIPPED TWO CARLOADS BEFORE DEFAULTING, AFTER WHICH PITTSBURGH MANGANESE CORP. RESUMED OPERATION. THE COMPTON MANGANESE CORP. REOPENED THE MINE IN 1956. THE MINE HAS BEEN CLOSED SINCE 1957. THE ROCK IN THE MINE WAS BROKEN DOWN BY BLASTING AND FURTHER CRUSHED AT THE MILL, WASHED, CONCENTRATED, AND HAND PICKED. THE ORE WAS CRUSHED RATHER FINE TO REMOVE THE INCLUDED SANDSTONE, RESULTING IN A PRODUCT WHICH WAS MOSTLY SMALL PARTICLES. THE PRODUCT WAS HAULED BY WAGON TO THE RAILROAD AT COMPTON.

General comments

Subject category Comment text
Deposit ORE ZONE REPORTED TO BE 30.5 M (100 FT) WIDE IN THE TUNNEL, BUT STOSE, ET. AL., (1919) REPORTED THE ORE ZONE DID NOT APPEAR TO BE OVER 6 M (20 FT) WIDE IN THE OPENCUT. THE ORE OCCURS AS THIN SEAMS IN CRACKS AND SPACES BETWEEN BLOCKS AND FRAGMENTS OF BRECCIATED SANDSTONE AND ALONG JOINT AND BEDDING PLANES. THE SEAMS REACH A MAXIMUM THICKNESS OF 10 CM (4 IN), BUT THERE ARE POCKETS WHICH CONTAIN UP TO 100 POUNDS OF ORE. THE SANDSTONE IS BRECCIATED, SOFT, BUFF AND CRUMBLES READILY. THE MANGANESE CEMENTS THE SANDSTONE.
