Deposit LOCATION TO NEAREST TOWN BASED ON DEFENSE MAPPING AGENCY MAP ONC C-2. A JV OF ELKEM TECHNOLOGY, KVARNER ENGINEERING, AND BOLIDEN CONTECH WON TENDER RIGHTS TO MODERNIZE THE SMELTER. MODERNIZATION TO COST $256 MILLION. REBUILDING MAY START IN 1995. NORWAY TO CONTRIBUTE $42 MILLION, FINLAND AND SWEDEN EACH TO CONTRIBUTE $1 MILLION, AND RUSSIA TO CONTRIBUTE THE REMAINDER. FINANCING TO BE PROVIDED BY IMPOSING A CUSTOMS DUTY ON EXPORTED NICKEL.
