Deposit FOR THE PURPOSE OF ANALYSIS CAPITAL COSTS TO DEVELOPE THE MONCORVO DEPOSIT ARE AS FOLLOWS (1981 US $). EXPLORATION AND RESEARCH - $1.4 MILLION; MINE DEVELOPMENT - $4.4 MILLION MINE EQUIPMENT - $17.3 MILLION; MINE PLANT - $16.3 MILLION; BENEFICIATION PLANT - $93.3 MILLION; PELLET PLANT - $61.3 MILLION; AND INFRASTRUCTURE - $122.8 MILLION. THIS IS BASED ON A PREPOSED 4.3 MILLION MT/YR OPERATION AND A WASTE TO ORE RATIO OF 0.5:1. OPERATING COSTS ARE ESTIMATED AT: MINE $1.53/MT, AND MILL $2.73/MT. DRAWBACKS TO DEVELOPMENT HAVE BEEN BENEFICIATION AND TRANSPORTATION. BENEFICIATION WOULD REQUIRE FINE GRINDING AND MAGNETIC SEPARATION AND FLOTATION, SINCE THE ORE CONTAINS BOTH HEMATITE AND MAGNETITE. THERE HAS ALSO BEEN DIFFICULTY IN REDUCING THE PHOSPHORUS CONTENT (0.4 - 0.5 IN THE ORE) TO ACCEPTABLE LEVELS. CONCENTRATE TRANSPORTATION WOULD REQUIRE THE CONSTRUCTION OF A 22KM RAILROAD OR PIPELINE TO POCINHO. AN EXISTING RAIL ROAD CONNECTS POCINHO TO THE PORT OF LEIXOES (190 KM). PROPOSALS HAVE SUGGESTED THE PELLET PLANT TO BE BUILT AT POCINHO, LEIXOES, AND ALSO AT SEIXAL (NEAR LISBON). RIVER TRANSPORTATION ON THE DOURO RIVER HAS ALSO BEEN CONTEMPLATED BUT THIS WOULD REQUIRE AT LEAST TWO DAMS WITH LOCKS. THE DAMS HAVE BEEN IN THE POLITICAL ARENA FOR SOME YEARS, BUT AS FAR AS IS KNOWN, LITTLE PROGRESS HAS BEEN MADE ON THEIR ACTUAL PLANNING.
