Comments on the geologic information

  • THE CORVILLO OREBODY IS ONE OF MANY EVAPORATIVE DEPOSITS ALIGNED IN A BELT 550 KM. LONG THAT RUNS FROM THE CENTER OF SICILY WEST-SOUTHWEST TO THE SEA. MINERALIZATION OCCURS BETWEEN DEPTHS OF 200 TO 600 M. WITH THICKNESSES RANGING FROM 2 TO 8M., WHICH IS RELATIVELY THIN COMPARED WITH OTHER ACTIVE DEPOSITS. THE ORE GRADE IS REPORTED TO BE "MODEST" AND THE DEPOSIT IS VERY IRREGULAR.

Comments on the ownership information

  • COMPANY ALSO KNOWN AS "ISPEA"; OTHER OWNER IS ITALKALKI SPA.

Comments on the production information

  • THE MINE BEGAN PRODUCTION IN 1964, BUT ITS KAINITE PRO- DUCTION WAS DELAYED AS ITS PLANT , THE PASQUASIA PLANT, DID NOT OPEN UNTIL 1973.

Comments on the reserve resource information

  • RECORD 1 DID NOT HAVE TONNAGE DATA ENTERED (850103-MODIFIC). BIBLLOGRAPHIC REFERENCE COULD NOT BE LOCATED TO UPDATE THIS DATA. COMMODITY DATA CHANGED FROM "K2SO4" TO "K2O", GRADE WAS CORRECTED, AND MINERAL TYPE ADD.
  • ESTIMATED INSITU ORE RESOURCES USED IN THE 1984 ECONOMIC EVALUATION OF THE PROPERTY. DATA BASED ON INFORMATION FROM THE DEPOSIT REPORT PREPARED BY THE CONTRACTOR.

General comments

Subject category Comment text
Deposit IT HAS BEEN RECOMMENDED THAT THE CORVILLO MINE BE CLOSED BECAUSE OF THE FOLLOWING REASONS: FIRST, THE PRODUCTION ECONOMICS ARE POOR AT CORVILLO DUE TO THE OREBODY THINNESS, THE SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER GRADE OF THE CORVILLO ORE IN COMPAR- ISON TO PASQUASIA ORE, AND THE QUANTITY OF THE RESERVE. SEC- OND BOTH CORVILLO AND THE PASQUASIA MINE SEND ORE TO THE PASQUASIA PLANT. HOWEVER, IF BOTH OPERATIONS , WORKING AT CAPACITY,SENT OUTPUT TO PASQUASIA, THE PLANT WOULD BECOME SATURATED WITH FEED. THUS, PRODUCTION AT CORVILLO MEANS RE- DUCED OUTPUT AT PASQUASIA. THIS WOULD BRING THE PASQUASIA MINE CLOSER TO ITS BREAK-EVEN POINT LEADING TO A REDUCED PROFIT MARGIN. HOWEVER, IT IS ASSUMED THAT THE MINE WILL OPERATE AT CAPACITY FROM 1984 TILL MINEOUT OF THE RESERVES FOR TWO REASONS FIRST, THE CONCERN OVER THE ACCOUNTABILITY FOR INVESTMENTS WILL DELAY THE DECISION TO CLOSE;AND SECONDLY, NOTABLE RE- SERVES DO EXIST AND AT LEAST A TENTATIVE PLAN IS READY TO BEGIN OPERATIONS AGAIN.
