  • IN 1973 CAM(CONSOL.AFRICAN MINES) PLANS WERE TO DEVELOP 4,000,000 MTPY IRON ORE MINE BY 1976 WITH UNION CORP. ASSUMING FINANCIAL AND TECHNICAL CONTROL. IN LATE 1973 CAM HAD APPLIED FOR PERMISSION TO BUILD AN ORE TERMINAL AT ALGOA BAY (ST.CROIX TERMINAL). AT THAT TIME IT WAS SAID THAT THE DECISION ON ORE TERMINAL WOULD DIRECTLY AFFECT DECISION ON DEVELOPING THE MINE. IN 1975 A FEASIBILITY STUDY WAS STARTED TO DETERMINE IF A NEARBY PROPERTY WITH SUBSTANTIAL MANGANIFEROUS ORE AND FAIR AMOUNT OF HIGH GRADE FE ORE COULD BE DEVELOPED ALONG WITH THE GAMAGARA MINE. BY 1978 PLANNED CAPACITY HAD JUMPED TO 15,000,000 MTPY; PROJECT NOT LISTED IN 1979 SURVEY OF E/MJ. CO-ORDINATES ARE OF GAMAGARA FARM EAST OF AND ADJACENT TO SISHEN(SEQ. NO. 791-005-0001).
