Comments on the geologic information

  • THERE ARE OVER 1100 LENSES OF CHROMITE OVER AN AREA OR 50 SQUARE KM. THE BEMANEVIKA LENS IS THE LARGEST WITH MORE THAN 2 MILLION TONS OF ORE; OTHERS VARY FROM A FEW THOUSAND TO 200000 TONS EACH. 3 TYPES OF DEPOSITS ARE PRESENT: PYROXENITIC LENSES INTER- CALATED WITH GNEISS, LENSES WITHIN TALC SCHISTS, INTER- STRATIFIED WITHIN GNEISSIC OR AMPHIBOLITIC SERIES, AND INTERSTRATIFIED LENSES, AT TIMES MASSIVE.

Comments on the production information

  • PRODUCING 1976. SIEMS SAYS PRODUCING SINCE 1969. METALS SOURCEBOOK SAYS START-UP IN 1974. CAPACITY, 1974: 154,200 MTPY CHROMITE ORE TO BE TREATED AT BEMANIVIKA MILL OPERATING AT 80% OF CAPACITY. METERS IN LENGTH. THESE LARGER LENSES WERE AMONG A TOTAL OF OUTPUT CAPACITY, 1976: 156,500 MTPY OF 48-49% CR2O3. WITH ORE BEING TREATED AT A CENTRAL MILLING PLANT (ASSUME BEMANIVIKA MILL) WHICH WAS ALSO TREATING ORE FROM THE BEFANDRIANA PIT (OUTPUT ATTRIBUTED TO BEFANDRIANA PIT ORE WAS 41,087 MTPY OF 48-49% CR2O3). FINAL PRODUCT FROM MILL ATTRIBUTED TO ANKAZATOLANA ORE IS TRANSPORTED TO TAMATAVE HARBOR(ASSUME TRUCKING 680 KM). THE ANKAZATOALANA PIT WAS AT A DEPTH OF 100 METERS.

Comments on the reserve resource information

  • 1/89 INSITU DEMO.TONNAGE = SURFACE MINEABLE ONLY. ANKAZATOALANA = 36.6 % OF TONNAGE, BEMANEVIKA= 29.9 % OF TONNAGE.
  • FOR ANALYSIS: 205,000 MTPY ROM FOR: 20,570 MTPY LUMP AT 42 % CR2O3, 32,000 MTPY CONCS.AT 48 % CR2O3 AND 50,000 MTPY DE- PHOSPHORIZED CONCS. AT 49.5 % CR2O3. ALL PRODUCTS FOR EXPORT THROUGH TAMATAVE PORT AS CHROMITE MET PRODUCTS.
  • IT IS ESTIMATED THAT APPROXIMATELY 4,400,000 MT OF RESERVE IS LEFT AT ANKAZATOALANA PIT AS OF 1980 BASED ON ESTIMATES REPORTED AT START OF MINING AND EST. PRODUCTION FROM 1974- 1980. COMPANY OFFICIALS HAVE MENTIONED TOTAL DISTRICT RESOURCES AT 10,000,000 MT WHICH IS PROBABLY A CONSERVATIVE ESTIMATE. FOR PURPOSES OF ANALYSIS THE REMAINING 5,500,000 MT OF RESOURCE IS ASSUMED PRESENT AT THE OLD BEMANEVIKA PIT WHICH WOULD HAVE TO BE REHABILITATED PLUS AT LEAST 25 OTHER SEPARATE LENSES WITH AVERAGE DIMENSIONS OF 100 METERS LONG BY 9 METERS THICK BY 50 METERS DEEP. THE AMOUNT OF LUMP ORE ACTUALLY PRODUCED AT THE BEMANEVIKA MILL IS NOT KNOWN. IT HAS BEEN ASSUMED HOWEVER FOR CODING THAT THE AMOUNT IS VERY SMALL (ONLY 5% OF TOTAL PRODUCTS OUT). THE ASSUMPTION WAS MADE BECAUSE OF THE RELATIVELY LOW GRADE OF RUN OF THE MINE ORE AT ANKAZATOALANA. M1C3 = M9C4.
