Comments on the geologic information

  • THE LISTED MINERALS ARE A COMPILATION OF THE COMMON ORE, ACCESSORY, AND GANGUE MINERALS FOUND THROUGHOUT THE COBALT MINING AREA.
  • THE PRIMARY CONTROL ON MINERALIZATION, IS THE PRESENCE OF THE NIPISSING DIABASE SILL, WHICH INTRUDES COBALT SERIES HURONIAN CONGLOMERATES AND GREYWACKES AND COLLECTIVELY OVERLIE STEEPLY DIPPING KEEWATIN ARCHEAN ANDESITES UNCONFORMABLY. THE DIABASE SILL IS DESCRIBED AS SUB- HORIZONTAL IN THE LITERATURE, AND THUS HAS NO APPRECIABLE STRUCTURAL DIP OTHER THAN A GENTLY ROLLING OVERALL FORM. ORE OCCURS BOTH ABOVE AND BELOW THE INTRUSION, WITHIN THE COBALT GROUP. AVERAGE THICKNESS OF THE COBALT GROUP SEDIMENTS IN THIS MINING DISTRICT IS ON THE ORDER OF A FEW HUNDRED FEET.

Comments on exploration

  • EXPLORATION IN THIS AREA, ALTHOUGH NOT WELL DOCUMENTED, HAS BEEN ONGOING AND EXTENSIVE SINCE THE FIRST DISCOVERY OF SILVER IN THE COBALT REGION IN 1903. TYPICALLY EXPLORATION DRILLING, AND TUNNELING PROCEEDS SIMULTANEOUSLY WITH MINING ACTIVITY, SO THAT RESERVE ESTIMATES CHANGE CONTINUOUSLY WITH THE EXTENT OF THE WORKINGS IN ALL OF THE MINES IN THIS AREA.

Comments on the production information

  • THE PENN MILL IN COBALT BURNED DOWN IN 1986. IT HAD A CAPACITY OF 350 TPD (318 MTPD). THE MILL WAS REBUILT ON THE OLD SITE, WITH A DESIGN CAPACITY OF 300 TPD (272 MTPD) AND WAS ONSTREAM BY JULY 1987. THE ACID-CYANIDE LEACH FACILITY WAS BUILT IN 1974 IN COBALT BY INTSEL OF CANADA AND ST. JOSEPH EXPLORATIONS LTD. THE 1986 AGNICO-EAGLE ANNUAL REPORT ESTIMATES RECONSTRUCTION COSTS OF THE PENN MILL TO BE $2.5 MILLION (U.S. OR CDN NOT SPECIFIED). THE OLD PENN MILL WAS BUILT IN 1957.
