Comments on the geologic information

  • THE MINISTRY OF MINING OFFICIALS REPORT THAT THE HEAD GRADES OF ORE EXPLOITED IS APPROXIMATELY 25% TO 28% FE2O3. HOWEVER, SOME PUBLISHED ROMANIAN SOURCES SUGGEST AVERAGE HEAD GRADES OF 25% TO 30% FE2O3. ALL SOURCES AGREE THAT THE MINE ALSO CONTAINS APPROXIMATELY 20% SIO2 AND 1.5% MN. (1989) THE ORE EXTRACTED FROM THE HUNEDOARA MINE SITE CONSISTS MOSTLY OF SIDERITE AND ANKERITE. THE SIDERITE IS A CARBONATE FOUND COMMONLY IN A CLAY LIMESTONE. MOST SIDERITE IS DISPOSED OF AT THE MILL SITE DURING WASHING OF THE ORE. THE ANKERITE IS THE RESULT OF AN EXTENDED DOLOMITE WITH THE IRON SUBSTITUTING MAGNESIUM. ALONG WITH THE ANKERITE AND SIDERITE, THE ORE ALSO CONSISTS OF ABUNDANT AMOUNTS OF HEMATITE AND MAGNETITE. BOTH OF THESE COMPONENTS ARE ESSENTIAL PARTS IN THE FORMATION OF THE IRON ORE. THEY ARE FOUND IN CONCORDANT LENSES IN SERICRITE - CHLORITES SCHISTS. (1989) THE OCCURENCE OF THE MINERALIZATION OF THE ORE BODY IS BELIEVED TO BE THE RESULT OF A COMBINATION OF VOLCANIC AND SEDIMENTARY ACTIVITY. THE ORE IS FOUND ENCLOSED IN A COMBINATION OF UNSPECIFIED IGNEOUS AND UNSPECIFIED SEDIMENTARY ROCK FORMATIONS. (1989)

Comments on the production information

  • THE ORE IS EXTRACTED FROM THE MINE BY BOTH OPEN PIT AND UNDERGROUND OPERATIONS. IT IS THEN SHIPPED TO THE MILL WHERE CLAYS ARE REMOVED BY MEANS OF WASHING. THE WASHED ORE IS THEN CONCENTRATED BY DRY GRAVITY METHODS. (1989) THE ORE EXTRACTED FROM THE HUNEDOARA MINE IS NORMALLY BLENDED WITH HIGH GRADE IRON ORE IMPORTED FROM THE COMMONWEALTH OF INDEPENDENT STATES. PRIOR TO 1989, ALL IRON ORE PRODUCTION WAS SHIPPED FOR USE IN DOMESTIC IRON AND STEEL WORKS. SINCE 1989, THE MINISTRY OF MINING HAS ALLOWED SOME EXPORTING OF IRON PRODUCTS IN THE FORM OF FERROSILICON AND FERROMANGANESE. (1989) FOR YEARS 1984 THROUGH 1990, PRODUCTION WAS ESTIMATED TO BE APPROXIMATELY 400,000 METRIC TONS OF CONCENTRATE. THIS AMOUNT WAS THE RESULT OF AN ESTIMATED 1,500,000 METRIC TONS OF ORE THROUGHPUT FOR EACH YEAR OF PRODUCTION. (1989) ACCORDING TO MINISTRY OF MINING OFFICIALS, THE HUNEDOARA MINE CONSISTS OF EXTREMELY LOW GRADE ORES AND WILL LIKELY CLOSE IN THE NEAR FUTURE DUE TO THE INABILITY TO COMPETE ON A UNIVERSAL BASIS. THE SHUTDOWN WILL HAVE NO SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON STEEL PRODUCTION IN THE COUNTRY DUE TO A 90% RELIANCE ON IMPORTED RAW MATERIAL. (1989) AS OF 1989, NO DATA WAS AVAILABLE WHICH INDICATES THE PORTION OF EXTRACTION DEDICATED TO SURFACE MINING OR UNDERGROUND MINING. DATA WAS ALSO ABSENT IN THE FORM OF RECOVERY RATES FOR THE CONCENTRATION PROCESSES. IN 1989, COMMODITIES RESEARCH UNIT LIMITED QUOTED THE HUNEDOARA MINE, ALONG WITH ALL OTHER IRON ORE MINES IN ROMANIA, A NON-VIABLE MINE FOR PRODUCTION CONSIDERATIONS.

Comments on the reserve resource information

Comments on other economic factors

  • THE MINERAL-CHEMICAL CLASSIFICATIONS FOR THE HEMATITE AND MAGNETITE FALL INTO THE FAMILY OF OXIDES WHILE THE SIDERITE AND ANKERITE BELONG TO THE CARBONATE FAMILY.
  • THE MINING EQUIPMENT USED AT THE MINE SITE IS REPORTED TO BE PRIMARILY ROMANIAN MANUFACTURED. THE CONDITION OF THE EQUIPMENT IS EXTREMELY OUTDATED, POORLY MAINTAINED, AND IN MANY CASES, OBSOLETE. (1989) ONCE THE ORE IS EXTRACTED FROM THE MINE, IT IS SHIPPED TO THE MILL TO BE WASHED AND CONCENTRATED. 100% OF THE EXTRACTED ORE IS SHIPPED TO THE MILL SITE. (1989)
