Comments on the geologic information

  • THE MT. WHALEBACK (NEWMAN) IRON ORE DEPOSITS OCCUR IN THE BROCKMAN AND MARRA MAMBA IRON FORMATIONS OF THE HAMERSLEY GROUP. IN ENTIRETY, THE GROUPS FORM A DIVERSE COLLECTION OF CLASTIC AND CHEMICAL SEDIMENTS, WITH BASIC AND ACID LAVA FLOWS AND ARE INTRUDED BY DOLERITE SILLS AND DIKES AND BY LARGE GRANITE PLUTONS. THE IRON ORE DEPOSITS HAVE RESULTED FROM A PROCESS OF IN SITU ALTERATION OF BANDED IRON FORMATION. TO DATE, TWO BASIC ORE TYPES HAVE BEEN RECOGNIZED WITH THE LEASE, EACH DIFFERING IN CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL NATURE. THE HEMATITE ORES ARE A LOW PHOSPHORUS TYPE, LOCATED IN THE BROCKMAN IRON FORMATION. THE GOETHITE-HEMATITE ORE IS TYPICAL OF THE MARRA MAMABA IRON FORMATION. THE ORE IN MT. WHALEBACK RANGES FROM HARD, DENSE, MASSIVE HEMATITE TO HARD, POROUS, BANDED HEMATITE. UNLIKE THE BROCKMAN IRON FORMATION ORE FROM MT. WHALEBACK, THE MARRA MAMBA ORE IS YELLOW/BROWN IN COLOR, SOFT AND FRIABLE.
