Comments on the production information

  • THE MINE STARTED PRODUCTION IN 1758. THE MOST RECENT PROGRAM OF EXPANSION AND MODERNISATION WAS COMPLETED IN 1982.

Comments on the reserve resource information

  • RESERVES ARE SUFFICIENT FOR A FURTHER 5 YEARS OR APPROXIMATELY 1.1 MILLION METRIC TONS. GRADES ARE EXPECTED TO DECLINE DURING THE REMAINING YEARS. THE CUT-OFF GRADE IS 0.7 PERCENT COPPER AND 20 PERCENT IRON.

Comments on other economic factors

  • ALL ORE IS DELIVERED BY RAIL TO THE TURJIN CONCENTRATOR, 1.5 KILOMETERS FROM THE MINE.
  • THE DEPOSIT IS MINED BY UNDERGROUND METHODS. ACCESS IS BY FOUR VERTICAL SHAFTS RANGING IN DEPTH FROM 160 TO 590 METERS. THE ORE IS EXTRACTED BY SUB-LEVEL STOPING, WITH AND WITHOUT PILLARS. STOPED OUT AREAS ARE BACKFILLED. ORE IS REDUCED TO LESS THAN 400 MILLIMETERS IN AN UNDERGROUND PRIMARY CRUSHER. ORE RECOVERY IS 92 PERCENT AND DILUTION IS 19 PERCENT. CURRENT MINING IS BETWEEN THE 170 AND 590 METER LEVELS AND IS ON A THREE SHIFT BASIS, 300 DAYS PER YEAR. HANGING WALL WEAKNESS, FAULTING, AND THE INFLOW OF WATER AT 200 CUBIC METERS PER HOUR ARE THE MAJOR MINING PROBLEMS. TRACKED HAULAGE IS USED. LOCOMOTIVES AND OTHER MOBILE EQUIPMENT IS OF SOVIET ORIGIN. IN 1990, THE COST OF MINING ONE METRIC TON OF ORE WAS R16.90.
