Comments on the geologic information

  • THE ITABIRITES, WITH AN IRON CONTENT VARYING BETWEEN 35 AND 60 PERCENT SEEM TO HAVE BEEN FORMED BY PRE-CAMBRIAN MARINE SEDIMENTARY PROCESSES. THE VARIATIONS IN METAL CONTENT WERE CAUSED BY CHANGES IN THE PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL CONDITIONS UNDER WHICH THE PRECIPITATION OF THE IRON AND SILICA COLLOIDS TOOK PLACE. ITABIRITES ARE THE HOST ROCK FOR THE HIGH-GRADE HEMATITE DEPOSITS OF THE MINAS SERIES. ITABIRITE IS THE NAME GIVEN TO THE BANDED ROCKS COMPOSED OF ALTERNATE LAYERS OF HEMATITE AND QUARTZ WITH AN IRON CONTENT VARYING BETWEEN 35 AND 60 PERCENT. ITABIRITES READILY DISINTERGRATE, GIVING RISE TO THE TYPE OF ORE KNOWN AS CHAPINHA, EITHER BY CHEMICAL DECOMPOSITION WHEN THE HEMATITE IS HYDRATED, OR BY MECHANICAL DIS- INTEGRATION CAUSED BY LEACHING FOLLOWED BY DISINTEGRATION OF THE QUARTZ MASSES, WHICH TURN INTO FINE SAND AS THE HEMATITE DISINTEGRATES INTO FLAT, ANGULAR FRAGMENTS (BISCUIT ORE).
